the remnant
5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.
Notice Paul is talking specifically of the Jews. He is asking if all of Israel is condemned and forsaken of God. God replies that there are a few who have not bowed the knee to Baal. Today there are some Jews who have not despised the sacrifice of Christ. They are the remnant of God's former people...they will be saved if faithful, however we could not conclude by this that they are God's church - merely individuals who have not brought damnation upon themselves by joining with those who do.

Re: the remnant
As a church and a nation the Jews rejected Christ as their Saviour. Individual Jews may not have but the corporate body led by the priests and elders forfeited their rights and responsibilities to be the leaders in giving the truth to the world. That priviledge passed to the Christian church, beginning with the disciples and apostles. They were a seperate company from the Jewish leaders and actually persecuted and put to death by the Jewish church. From there, the church became centralised in Rome, which soon apostasied into the religion we know as Roman Catholicism. The right of being called the church of God passed from Rome to the church of the Waldenses who published the gospel from their mountain retreats. Unfortunately they compromised with Rome and became part of the 'mother' until Luther led in the reformation of 16th century. The right of being God's church passed from the Waldenses to the reformers, who, while not being one corporate agency, worked together to publish the true gospel as opposed to that taught by the Jews, Catholics, and now Waledenses. History repeated once again as the reformers became divided and neglected the beautiful truths once delivered to them and during the great religious awakening of the 19th century, they didn't recognise the voice of God in the proclamation of the soon coming of Christ. The role of God's church passed to the few consecrated and dedicated Christians called Adventists. The adventists were soon tested as awareness of the true Sabbath became prevalent and many rejected it, while a few accepted it. There was a separation and the role of God's church passed from them to a few faithful Christians who were upholding the former and present truths God had revealed to His people. The new movement comprising of God's people was called Seventh - Day Adventism. Like it's past churches, the SDA church also lapsed into sleepy apostasy, eventually disfellowshipping and applauding the condemning to death those who refused to partake in the bloodshed and Sabbath breaking practice of war. These people became known as the SDA Reformers. 100 years later we find ourselves in the same position that has passed through all history. Reformation and revival has slowed and become cold and lifeless. There has not been another separation (there has been false ones though), and we are left in a position that desperately needs God. But God still has a people. Collectively they are not the Jews, Catholics, Waldenses, Protestants or SDA's. There are faithful people in those churches/organisations, but those organisations are not the that which God is working through. the SDARM is still God's people...but what is their future? Only God knows.
