But every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb; and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. ?

Ex 13:2 Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, [both] of man and of beast: it [is] mine.
I believe this to mean that the firstborn(male) must be used in the service of God. Use the lamb as a sacrifice, a son going to serve the Lord but the ass cannot be sacrificed because it is an unclean animal so the the money that the ass is worth must be given to the work of the Lord. So if you do not want to give the money or you do not have the money you must break its neck.
