High priest shall not rend his clothes!
Lev. 21:10 "And he that is the high priest among his brethren, upon whose head the anointing oil was poured, and that is consecrated to put on the garments, shall not uncover his head, nor rend his clothes."
In Jesus' time Annas and Caiaphas were high priests:
Luke 3:2 "Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness."
But the year Jesus was on trial, Caiphas was the High priest:
John 18:13 "And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year."
John 18:24 "Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest."
So, Caiaphas, the High priest, in Jesus' trial, rent his clothes after he listens to what Jesus said about His second coming:
Matt. 26:64 "Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven."
Matt. 26:65 "Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy."
"When Christ declared Himself the Son of God, Caiaphas, in pretended horror, rent his robe, and accused the Holy One of Israel of blasphemy." 29 The S.D.A. Bible Commentary 5:1104. CC 323.3
"He had done the very thing that the Lord had commanded should not be done. Standing under the condemnation of God, he pronounced sentence on Christ as a blasphemer.... The priestly robe he rent in order to impress the people with his horror of the sin of blasphemy covered a heart full of wickedness." 30 Ibid., 1105. CC 323.4
