Acts chapter 2 Empty Acts chapter 2

Post by Mathétés Sun Jan 28, 2018 8:27 am

Many times we hear that in the day of Pentecost the multitude heard in their own language what was being said by the apostle Peter (actually that is what the Bible says), but it may seem that they were baptized by the Holy Spirit too, so here are some of my thoughts on this matter.

the promise:

Acts 1:8 "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."

the number of people who were together:

Acts 1:15 "And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)"

Then, it continues in next chapter:

Acts 2:1 "And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place."

After that, we have the description of the manifestation of the Holy Ghost in such a way that people (the multitude from without) were confounded and amazed. Now, when the disciples were filled with the Holy Ghost, the Bible says that THEY began to speak with other tongues:

Acts 2:4 "And THEY were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave THEM utterance."

So, all of them (disciples - 120) spoke in different tongues. Notice that the multitude HEARD THEM speak in their own language:

Acts 2:6 "Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man HEARD THEM speak in his own language."

The following verses give us details of whom were the ones that heard the disciples speak in their own tongues THE WONDERFUL WORKS OF GOD:

Acts 2:9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
Acts 2:10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
Acts 2:11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues THE WONDERFUL WORKS OF GOD.

We can see that the multitude was already listening to the message the disciples were delivering, and they were all amazed and were in doubt of the meaning of what was going on and some others were mocking whether the disciples were drunk or not. Then, Peter stands up with the eleven and delivers a powerful message from heaven:

Acts 2:14 "But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words."

Here it is where the question raises: "Did Peter spoke in his own language and the multitude heard him in their own tongue?" (as without need of translation?). But, let us remember that the ones who received the Holy Ghost were the disciples and not the multitude - it doesn't mean that the Holy Spirit was not working in the multitude's hearts to accept the message, to repent and be baptized - so the people again (because they heard a message about " the wonderful works of God" by the disciples before) listened to Peter's message but this time, I personally believe, that the disciples were helping Peter to deliver the message as if they were spread with different groups of people repeating what he was saying to the people according to their specific tongue wherein they were born.
That is why the multitude, after listening to what has been said, asks not only Peter but to the disciples as well what they were going to do:

Acts 2:37 "Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said UNTO PETER AND TO THE REST OF THE APOSTLES, MEN and BRETHREN, what shall we do?"

And Peter answers again:

Acts 2:38 "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

The reason I say that is because there were thousands of people and on that day about three thousand souls ("they that gladly received his word") were added to the church of God:

Acts 2:41 "Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls."

This is my contribution about this matter,
what do you think? Any other different perspective?

Acts 2 is about the gift of tongues and not about the gift of Hearing!

" The Holy Spirit, assuming the form of tongues of fire, rested upon those assembled. This was an emblem of the gift then bestowed on the disciples, which enabled them to speak with fluency languages with which they had heretofore been unacquainted. The appearance of fire signified the fervent zeal with which the apostles would labor and the power that would attend their work. {AA 39.1}
"There were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven." During the dispersion the Jews had been scattered to almost every part of the inhabited world, and in their exile they had learned to speak various languages. Many of these Jews were on this occasion in Jerusalem, attending the religious festivals then in progress. Every known tongue was represented by those assembled. This diversity of languages would have been a great hindrance to the proclamation of the gospel; God therefore in a miraculous manner supplied the deficiency of the apostles. The Holy Spirit did for them that which

they could not have accomplished for themselves in a lifetime. They could now proclaim the truths of the gospel abroad, speaking with accuracy the languages of those for whom they were laboring. This miraculous gift was a strong evidence to the world that their commission bore the signet of Heaven. From this time forth the language of the disciples was pure, simple, and accurate, whether they spoke in their native tongue or in a foreign language. {AA 39.2}

That is what we call the gift of tongues (pure, simple, and accurate),
thanks for that contribution wolfie!
